Abstract

Auricular vagus nerve electrostimulation is a modality of therapy widely used for different chronic, metabolic, inflammatory, and neurodegenerative diseases. This technology allows modulation of parasympathetic system impact in different structures, both brain and body. Recent studies have shown an increase in the effectiveness of the stimulation when it is synchronized with the ventilatory cycle. Therefore, this study describes the idealization and the development of a chest trap, through a review of current devices and the design of a chest trap with the specifications to identify the ventilatory cycle. A market and literature review was conducted on several sensors and chest traps available. Design requirements were defined, establish the technical, functional, and aesthetic parameter of the chest trap. Different sensors were tested to identify which met all the design criteria. Finally, an algorithm was developed for data acquisition and visualization of the signal of ventilatory cycle. Four sensors were found, with FMAMSDXX025WC2C being effective for identifying the ventilatory cycle. An algorithm was plotted to detect the minimum and maximum signals for initiated vagus nerve stimulation. The chest trap was designed with the sensor selected and the algorithm developed, proved effective in detect ventilatory cycle, allowing the identification of starting parameter when synchronized with transcutaneous vagus nerve electrostimulation.
