Performance of the sugar agroindustry in Mayabeque: analysis for a strategic restructuring

Abstract
In the face of a globalized and challenging environment characterized by technological limitations, difficulties accessing markets, fluctuations in international prices, and climatic pressures, this research explores the challenges of sugar industry development in the province of Mayabeque, focusing on the agro-industrial sugar companies of this western Cuban region. The study diagnoses the performance of these companies during the period from 2019 to 2023. To conduct the research, qualitative and quantitative data were collected through interviews, observations, document reviews, and performance indicator analyses. The results reflect the complex situation of the sugar sector in the territory and highlight the need for its revitalization, based on the considerable decline in the production of raw sugar, molasses, and alcohols.
