Abstract
One of the challenges of the metalworking industry related to the casting of parts is increasing the quality of castings. This depends on various determining factors that influence its behavior and in obtaining the desired mechanical properties. Due to the high cost of manufacturing castings, the use of computational simulation tools that allow engineers to ensure a priori, their quality, constitutes a paradigm in the current contexts of technological development. The present article aims to show the prediction through numerical simulation, of the possible defects that can originate in a casting in sand molds, when different pouring and preheating temperatures of the mold are used. The case of obtaining gray iron specimens by the gravity pouring method is analyzed. The behaviors in the stages of filling the mold and solidification of the metal are described. The results indicate that, with the studies carried out, the appropriate parameters for a better casting can be identified.
