Abstract

The use of minerals such as refractory chromite in the coating composition is a possibility for the replacement of FeCr as a source of Cr in tape-type electrodes with a rectangular core for recharging by welding. The work presents the problem of evaluating the operating behavior of the electrodes depending on the composition of the coating. The objective consisted in determining the influence of refractory chromite and graphite on the operating behavior and the properties of the metal deposited by a ribbon-type electrode and rutile coating. Operational performance was qualitatively evaluated by applying expert criteria. The effect of the coating composition on the chemical composition and hardness of the metal deposited by the electrodes was determined experimentally. The results reflect that the introduction of chromite and graphite in the rutile coating composition does not cause significant changes in the operating properties of the electrode. Finally, it is verified that it is possible to allocate the weld bead with more than 2% of Cr and more than 1.1% of C, by means of the carbothermic reduction of the refractory chromite, from the heat contributed by the electric arc during the recharging by welding with coated electrodes.
