Study of Water Consumption in Rural Communities

Abstract

In order to know the water consumption pattern within the houses in rural communities, as well as the distribution and demand variation during week days, measurements were taken in two population groups of different size. One group comprises five rural communities in Sancti Spiritus Province, while the other in three mountain isolated communities in Sierra Maestra, Granma Province. According to available information this is the only study on national level done up to this day in search for water consumption in these type of communities. By the analysis of the
gathered information mean per capita consumption was calculated for both types of communities. The values of this consumption depend on the type and facilities of the existing system and life conditions of the inhabitants. For this reason a single value is not recommended, instead it is suggested to a per capita consumption range for population above 200 persons for grouped housing and for dispersed housing, The use of recommended values for water consumption means lower values for water supply according to the means of distribution system.
